I bought this album having never heard any of the their earlier music. When I first heard it I was like "....what on earth is this?" but I kept at it and listened to it avidly. I think what helped was the fact that I read "Scar Tissue" by Antony Kiedis at the time; which involved all these songs and how they came up with them. I recommend reading this book if you cannot get into this album. So now I love it, it's so very ...

Item: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Greatest Hits
This really is a greatest hits album, and whatever your taste in music, I am sure you will enjoy listening to this. It is a brilliant example of what a great band like the Chili Peppers are, from the emotional "Under The Bridge" to the rocking "Parallel Universe", the laid back sound of "Californication" to the cheeky "Suck My Kiss", and the funky sounds of "Higher Ground" and the catchy "By The Way". Every track is excellent!

Red Hot Chili Peppers are a great band, I began to notice when they released their album "Californication" which I love. I saw this album in a record shop one day as I was browsing, and knowing it to be one of their earlier albums (1984) I thought I would buy it, even though I had never heard any of it.
Oh dear! I am so glad they changed their style from this! I just could not get into it, and believe me I tried! The album's insert booklet first line says it all:

I bought this double album on the day of release, eagerly awaited, I wasn't disappointed.
I think out of the 2 discs I prefer disc 1, Jupiter. Not as good in my opinion as "Californication" but certainly different.
A lot of this album is very laid back, with a few jiggy tracks making for a great combination of sound. I have played this album a lot, only realised how much when my eight year old was singing "Hump De Bump" and "Poppa was a copper and Momma was a Hippy!" and then ...
