Autotrader had long been the car website of choice for people looking for car ads. The website www.autotrader.com runs in conjunction with their Auto Trader classifieds magazine and offers consumers one of the biggest listings of new and used car ads available.
If you've placed an Autotrader Car Ad, or if you've responded to one, why not send us a review and tell us about your experience?

Good Points: Easy to set up advert and add photos.
Bad Points: Poor response to ad from legitimate buyers. Mostly suspicious phone calls (070 prefix) and from overseas. Other sellers use tricks to get their cars listed higher. High cost of ad, especially given problems and poor response I've had.
General comments: I placed an on-line ad to sell my car and paid £25 for two weeks. My last car sold through Auto Trader 3 years ago only cost £15. I got no response to ad for a week other than a company www.webuyanycar.co.uk even though I said 'no canvassers' in my ad. I also has a number of calls from 070 'personal numbers' and one from overseas. These types of numbers are allegedly linked with phone scams - call back and you'll be charged high rates or worse be exposed to fraud. Auto Trader realise this is a problem and offer a service that is designed to screen out these types of call by giving you a masked phone number in the ad. I didn't use the service because I think buyers would want to be sure that a car seller was also legitimate and would want call a land line number that can be linked to UK location. Another problem is that a lot of sellers (mostly traders) list mileages without the thousand's making their car come higher in the search results. This would be very easy for Auto Trader to fix - after all how many 1998 BMW cars have 120 miles on the clock?! Some traders also post ads to buy cays or sell other services using the same technique. I reported these problems to Auto Trader but have not had any response from them yet. It's a real shame that Auto Trader now seem to be suffering the same sort of problems that plague other on-line selling sites such as eBay. The UK credit crunch could explain the poor response rate to my ad, but the other issues should be tackled by Auto Trader to give me half a chance of buyers seeing my advert. I've used auto trader to sell two cars in the past with no problems, but this experience has put me off using Auto Trader ever again.

Used this site a fair few times in the past years but feel the prices both advertising and the magazine are far too high now. I think the high price of advertising can be a surprise particularly if the magazine doesn't get the circulation. Also with sites such as Ebay, they really cannot compete.

I live in sussex and advertised my used cars (5) on autotrader and www.usedcarsinsussex.co.uk. Autotrader cost me £19 for one week and used cars in sussex .co.uk was free. I received 6 calls from Autotrader and 4 from used cars in sussex website, I sold 2 from each, but look at the difference in price. I didn't have to speak to anybody on the used cars in sussex.co.uk website, just uploaded the car. The way it was displyed was perfect, all information at the punters fingertips. I have to ...

I was using Autotrader to sell my fleet of vans and trucks however I found the site was too costly for the limited response I recieved. I found sites like www.vansandtrucks.co.uk a lot more useful as it is free to place an ad and is a niche site specialising in in what I was selling.

It took ages to load the photos of my car onto Autotrader. The next day the ad appeared on the web but without the photos - and have not yet been updated (the 6th June). Even worse I opted of the telesafe number but the web displays my mobile and home number.
I have told them about this and e-mailed them but nothing has changed.
Other than junk texts and calls have had no serious calls.
Something has gone very wrong - at least over the last week.

Auto Trader is a great place to trade in vehicles but a word of warning:
When I advertised my email address I got a couple of replies which were obviously (to a trained person like myself) attempts at fraud. Don't believe those guys who want to buy your car and "send shipper" without even having seen the car.

I like Autotrader. they're a brilliant site to buy and sell cars. I sold my old Audi on Auto Trader a while back and have nothing but praise for them. The website layout is good and design is nice too. I often log onto www.autotrader.co.uk just for a look around even though I'm not after a new car at the moment. The do car reviews too which is always good.
I'm a regular site user and can't say anything bad about Autotrader.

Autotrader is beyond doubt THE number one website in the UK for buying or selling vehicles of all types, you can purchase anything from a digger to a Ducati.
Exchange and Mart used to be almost level pegging with Auto Trader but it lost its way a few years ago, with an over complicated website. I also used eBay for a while but got fed up with time wasters phoning me with stupid low offers when selling, and dishonest sellers posting a description of the car which was a work of fiction.
Autotrad ...

I've bought several vehicles through the Autotrader with no problems whatsoever. In fact it's the first stop for me when looking for an exchange or new vehicle, even car parts.

Not very user friendly and very expensive. It seems the web only option for cars is no longer available.
Autotrader messed up my removal when the car sold, which meant I kept getting calls.
Paid for 2 weeks in the magazine, and although it was only in for one week they refused to make any refund.

I have sold 2 cars on the Auto trader UK site. I have noticed that the price had gone up quite a bit in the interim period, now 15.99 for 2 weeks. However, the site has worked very well for me, selling both cars within a few days of advertising, although they were the sort of cars that go quite quickly (Alfa GTV & Accord Type-R). I have also bought my last 2 cars on the site (the Honda & a Boxster S) and it has all worked out very well.
The site is well set out and easy to use; registerin ...

My car went in the wrong section. Ad was a double spacer with 1 week and cost nearly 50.00.
When I phoned Autotrader UK they told me it was my mistake and wouldn't even offer an extra week in the right section at a discount. The staff were unhelpful and RUDE!
I will only use local advertising from now on. OR ebay!

I have already written a report at the beginning of the year on Auto Trader UK, however during the last 3 weeks my work mate and I have both been trying to sell cars, myself a Mazda MX5 and my mate a Audi A4.
We have both had the same problem and that is the continual email's from people who want to purchase the car but want to have a shipper involved in the payment. This is a scam to leave you with your car and at the same time to extract monies from you.
The site itself is a great way to purch ...

I have been using Autotrader for the last 11 years to both buy and sell cars and bikes as I get very bored of my vehicle's very fast and need a change.
The last car I sold using Autotrader was a 1997 BMW 520i SE at the beginning of May 2006. It had done 207,000 miles but I still managed to sell it to a car dealer for 1300 (he was the 2nd guy to respond to the add on the Thursday the Trader came out). This was the 5th car I had sold using Autotrader and apart from the odd time waster it gets m ...
